Project Name: Transport Interchange Students: Luca Lauricella, Mascia Collenz, Serena Di Ferro
The project aims to refunctionalize a marginal area of the city of Gorizia, creating a new urban gate and a reference point for the community. It focuses on the lot of the former streetcar shed, a nineteenth century abandoned building, which was a key area for the entrance of visitors to the city. Despite the state of decay in which it is found, it is still located in a strategic area from the transports point of view, since it borders the train station, the bus station and the hospital, and therefore finds itself at the center of a complex system of flows consisting of citizens and commuters who cross it every day to go to work, school and university. The project wants to exploit this potential and give the area back the central role that belonged to it in the past.
In this perspective, the former streetcar shed is converted into an intermodal hub with lounge, reading room, coworking space and bar, served by an automated multi-storey parking lot. The intervention on the building plays on the contrast between innovation and conservation: the perimeter wall, the streetcar tracks and the volume of the old guardian's house are preserved, while the original volume is converted into a glass envelope with angular shapes, in contrast with the geometric rigor of the projects of the past. Embankments supported by walls hide the view of the lower floors of the parking lot, making it a mysterious object, a hyper-technological machine that deliberately contrasts with the historic building.
The building on the other side of the street, formerly an illegal dump and now abandoned, is completely redesigned to integrate the intermodal hub with a center dedicated to slow mobility. Following the shape of the lot is then created a covered square on two levels, dedicated to bicycle parking. The access ramp surrounds the perimeter of a second square, located on a lower level, where the offices of a bike delivery company and a bike tour agency (serving tourists coming from the train station) are located.
The train station's square is also redesigned, with a reorganization of car and pedestrian flows and the introduction of a large covered square that dialogues with the other two buildings and helps to redevelop the entire neighborhood, creating a new urban gateway to the city in an area once forgotten.
