TEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE AS A TOOL TO REVITALIZE DISUSED SPACES

Project type: Master thesis project

University: Politecnico di Milano

This thesis work aims to present how temporary architecture can be a tool for urban transformation, as a quick alternative to reactivate the urban gap. As a case study, Paris former circular railway has been analyzed as a vacant and neglected urban area, with an unrevealed potential. Indeed, most of this railway, commonly known as “the little belt”, has been abandoned since the end of the XX century. In this context, temporary use is proposed to engage the rehabilitation process of this forgotten Parisian landmark.

For the revitalization of the space, temporary actions are implemented in three areas, selected for the interesting relation between the railway and the city’s fabric. Those three zones aim to act as incubators for

the whole circular railway.

The temporary installations were proposed for each site and their particularities. However, they have been designed to be adaptable and to evolve through time. With the implementation of those temporary structure, accesses are enabled and functions are given to the site. The installations are composed of standard units, designed to be modular, adaptable and evolve through time.

With the implementation of those temporary structures, accesses are enabled and functions are given to the site. Infrastructures, furnitures and activities will all contribute to the regeneration of the space, making it an animated and enjoyable new urban area.

The result is a gain in attractiveness in those three areas. Indeed, those temporary installations will aim to act as urban catalysts, in a space that needs solutions to call awareness to its potential. With those projects, hopefully ideas will emerge for the railway re-development. Moreover, the involvement of citizens would rise, leading to social and cultural development of the place. The ultimate objective is to revitalize the whole area in the long term taking advantage of those temporary uses. Even though the architecture is temporary, the ideas become permanent and the place is forever changed.
