The project “Connections: A footbridge and Library on the island of Zorrotzaurre”, is located in the last area that preserves the industrial past of Bilbao, the island of Zorrotzaurre.

The island, currently abandoned, has great deficiencies in urban planning, the main problem it faces is the lack of communication with neighboring areas It has only one access in its 2 km in length.

The project solves this deficiency through infrastructure like a hybrid footbridge that crosses the island and connects it with the neighboring shores, also incorporating a library program for the new urban future of Zorrotzaurre.

The project pays special attention to contact with the ground on each of the banks:

In the Zorrotza area, the footbridge rests on a new urban park on the shore of the estuary that connects with the existing train station, thus connecting the new infrastructure not only with neighboring areas but also with the rest of the Bilbao through the railway line.

On the island itself a new urban masterplan is generated with two green walkways on its shores and a building made of linear blocks that is interrupted by a transversal park that accompanies the walkway, crosses the entire island, connecting both shores and serving as main access to the new Library.

On the shore of San Ignacio the footbridge rests between two existing buildings generating a new urban square.

The library is structured in a linear way under the walkway with two distinct bays: traffic and study spaces. This linearity is broken by the creation of new blocks that house the rest of the library program and that on the upper floor will function as new urban squares that complement the public space of the walkway.
