Canterbury West Station is one of the gateways to Canterbury, connecting the city with cities including London, and Paris. The area boasts several Victorian buildings including the station itself and the nearby Goods Shed and is a gathering place for residents and visitors of Canterbury. Despite the importance of this area, much of it is underperforming. Dominated by hard build areas, especially in the form of car parks, and undermined by pollution, the spaces around the station are shapeless and lack the amenities and services of a major transportation hub. The Local District Plan for Canterbury has called for a regeneration of the area and the improvement of its connection with the city, and a redevelopment brief has been published.
For this project I have designed a new urban gateway into Canterbury which also include a new, well-defined urban spaces that connect Canterbury West station with the surrounding urban tissue and provide optimal thermal comfort.
