Does building architecture imply inhabiting it? Martin Heidegger dwells about such a question in his books, which brings us to meditate about the year 2020 and how we, the users, are living in the spaces we create due to the global pandemic.
What do spaces require to become architectural spaces?
Peter Zumpthor answers this question by saying that we are able to truly live architecture by experiencing it. This is how it fulfills its purpose. He adds that we should not build to find a special form rather than to provide a special feeling, create an atmosphere.
As architecture students, we are taught that a true architect never works alone. Even though we can design/think spaces, our goal is to improve life for users understanding architecture as a tool, with the contribution of a variety of fields.
Multidisciplinarity is the key to building our future (and present). Architecture connects societies, science, filosophy, economics, the people that practice it may be detail-oriented technicians solving equations pushing the limits of physics while others are the genuine poets of space and form.
Architects often work as translators who have the tools, such as ages and cultures, to generate this atmosphere. We create quality spaces by interpreting our surroundings, conceptualizing the spaces first. As a consequence we are inherently interested in the future, and architects are trained to envision the world not only as it is, but as it could be.
